4 out of 5 stars there's a catch....   January 9, 2009
We've used our new Blu-Ray a few times and have no complaints.... except we had to go to Radio Shack buy a $70 cable ("not included") with which to hook it up. This was a "black Friday" purchase -- great price -- and don't know whether full-price units include the cable.

5 out of 5 stars Creat Blu-ray player at the right price...   January 9, 2009
This is my first dive into blu-ray...I've always been into the cutting edge technology but have held out recently with the 1080P and blu ray release. I had the original rear projection lcd 1080i tvs.

So over the holidays I purchased a 1080p lcd and this bluray player.

For the price (I got this on the Black Friday sale for $150) it can't be beat.

I've had no issues with the player recognizing any old dvd's. The upgrade of the software to 2.0 was very easy which I did downstairs on the computer before brining up to the room where it would be setup. The start up times on blurays is about 30 seconds which is ok for me. Blu ray quality is exceptional and I've been happy with the upconversion of the dvd's as well. I would say my best dvd player not a blu ray is the xbox 360 and I think the dvd quality out of the blu ray player is better which has to be due to the upconversion capability.

All in all I'm very satisfied with this player and if you can ever find the $150 price again it's a no brainer. I would buy another one for another tv if I could find the price again...

4 out of 5 stars Great image, sound problems?   January 9, 2009
The image is awesome, however I am having volume problems with some Blu Ray Disks. I have to crank my volume all the way up for some disks. I don't have surround sound or home theatre, I am only using the HDTV surround sound. I don't know if that is the issue and I have no idea how to download the new patches. I guess I have to read the manual. Other than Volume is a great piece of equipment.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME   January 9, 2009

My Kids says "It's like being at the movies"

5 out of 5 stars Quiet, Sleek, with an easy hook-up   January 9, 2009
I'm fortunate enough to have two Blu-Ray players, this Sony and the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player, both players at the bottom tier of their brand. While I see a reason to get the next step up for Samsung (since it streams Netflix), I believe this Sony will be just as useful as its more expensive cousin. After all, except for true videophiles, most people won't use the advanced features of their players.

Like most Blu-Ray players, the Sony S350 takes several seconds to start up, then load the disc before playing, usually about 15-20 seconds for each process. The Samsung, while slightly faster (by 5 seconds or so), is a lot noisier; if you have your player outside of a cabinet, you might prefer the Sony for its quiet operation. The player can connect to your TV using HDMI, HDMI to DVI (with audio cables), or component cables -- none of these cables are included. (For a sturdy, long HDMI cable, see Belkin PureAV AV22300-12 12-Foot HDMI-to-HDMI Audio Video Cable.)There's a LAN port for network/internet access and a USB flash drive external memory slot for use with BD-Live and BonusView, available on compatible Blu-Ray discs.

You can play CDs or regular DVDs, just as you can with ordinary DVD players. Hook up the player to your receiver/home theater for extraordinary in-theater sound. If you own a Sony high-def television, you can use Bravia Sync to easily connect and control the Blu-Ray player, but most popular brands can be synced with the remote to control both the player and the television.

Blu-Ray high definition is extraordinary; the difference between it and regular DVDs is as obvious as that between DVDs and VHS tapes. If you don't have a high definition set (LCD, plasma, rear projection), then this player won't be worth the money since the difference will be negligible.
