4 out of 5 stars Great for small office   December 2, 2008
I replaced a brother 2700cn with this printer and it is much quieter. it has a faster warm up time. I print over a wireless network and it set-up easy. the manual feed seems to pull the paper in crooked if its not just right. I have only used it 2-3 months and am not sure about the longevity of toner. so far so good

4 out of 5 stars Good value and performance for the price   November 20, 2008

The XEROX Phaser 6130 is a lower priced color laser printer that will satisfy many users that don't have demanding printing needs but would like the benefits of a color laser instead of a color ink jet, or monochrome laser.

The printer is described as being "compact". Well I guess that's a relative term... the printer is quite tall at a speck over 15". Depth is around 16" and width is a little over 15". It's boxy.

I found the setup on my iMac to be a piece of cake. 20 minutes from box to printing. The quick setup sheet was not particularly helpful since it used some ambiguous graphics to indicate what you were supposed to be doing at each step. Of particular concern is the opening of the front panel to remove the imaging unit assembly. This operation which is essential to the setup could be potentially disastrous if you inadvertently touch it against the "transfer unit" that is quite vulnerable because of it's position when the front cover is opened.

If you are not used to setting up equipment, it's best to take your time and read the documentation thoroughly before undertaking the setup.

After the printer was turned on for the first time, it went through some calibration and eventually spit out two pages of configuration information. What I find quite objectionable is that the printer spits out these two pages EACH TIME your printer is cycled off and on. This is a waste of paper and energy. Fortunately this "start up page" can be turned off in the menu, but it takes a bit of digging to find the option.

The printer is a little noisy during printing and initial startup, but once a print job is finished, it almost immediately goes quiet except for a very low fan sound. After about 30 minutes it will go into an energy saver mode. The time before going into energy saver mode is adjustable, from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. It takes about 15 seconds for the printer to be ready to print once it's re-awakened.

Print quality was fine but not exceptional. Of course, given the price of the printer, it's quite good. The Phaser 6130 is no speed demon however. It took 2 minutes and 45 seconds to print a 8.5 x 11 photo in "enhanced" quality over ethernet. Printing regular text documents or web pages with a mix of small graphics and text was fairly quick.

As with any printer, consumables will be an ongoing cost. The XEROX toner cartridges are rated at 2000 pages and are priced around 68.

The other color laser printer that I own is an Okidata C5500n. The Oki printer cost about $230 more than the XEROX so it's not exactly a fair comparison. But the Okidata prints faster, has marginally more expensive consumables costs but is of a noticeably better print quality. Especially in printing photos, the Okidata has more vibrant colors and is sharper. The Okidata also has duplex capability which the Phaser 6130 does not.

Pros:
-Low price
-Seems well built
-Easy setup
-both USB and Ethernet connectivity

Cons:
-A bit noisy
-No Duplex printing capability
-Lacks a bit of sharpness and vibrancy printing photos

If you're looking to move up to a color laser printer from a black and white laser, or an ink jet printer, and don't have overly demanding printing needs, this printer is a worthwhile contender. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a duplex capable printer that can handle high volume printing, this is not your printer.

I give this a solid 4 rating at its price point.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Be Happy with This One!   November 18, 2008
Works well out of the box and with my wireless system. Very pleased with the quality of the prints. Finally, I'm got a printer that I'm happy with.

5 out of 5 stars Great Printer! Very Affordable. Highly Recommneded.   November 17, 2008
I needed a printer for my home office, for infrequent, small print jobs.
I am very satisfied with the fast warm-up speed of this unit, and the image quality it terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Color Laser Printer   October 31, 2008
This is the best color laser printer for the price. Easy to set up with a very fast processor. Electrostatic transfer unit seems to be engineered well. Color cartridges lock into position unlike drop/load design of HP color laser printers. Color printer is quiet and quality of prints very good. Achieved better results than HP color LaserJets.
