Superb Resolution
To achieve 4800 x 1200 color dpi resolution, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a patented print head with 1,600 precision nozzles, ejecting ink droplets as small as 2 picoliters. The result: Amazing images.

Four High-Performance Ink Tanks
This All-in-One uses four high-intensity dye-based color inks for rich photos and graphics, and a pigment black ink for clear, laser-quality text. Replace only the color that runs out, rather than a multi-color tank containing unused ink, helping to reduce your print costs.

Fast Printing
For extra productivity in the home or small office, you'll be able to produce up to 30 ppm black / up to 20 ppm color. You can also print a superb 4 x 6 inch borderless print in only about 46 seconds.

Automatic Document Feeder
The built-in Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) holds up to 30 originals, so it's faster and easier to copy, scan or fax your larger documents.

Auto Image Fix
The built-in Auto Image Fix feature helps you produce amazing results on all your photos. First, it categorizes your images into one of five types - Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery, Snapshot with Scenery, and Snapshot with Night Scenery - then applies optimal image correction accordingly. For example, it will automatically brighten faces that are backlit and underexposed, and correct color cast to help ensure more accurate skin tones.

Auto Image Fix ensures a good print every time.

Two Paper Trays
Two built-in paper trays let you store photo paper and plain paper of different sizes - so you're always ready to print.

View, Edit and Enhance Images
With the 1.8 inchLCD screen you can view images on a compatible memory card without having to download them to your computer, then enhance them before printing.

Network Connectivity
An Ethernet interface lets you connect to a home or office network, with connected computers sharing the use of this versatile machine.

High Performance Faxing
This Office All-In-One achieves Super G3 Hi-speed fax in color and B&W, and its memory can store 40 coded speed dials and up to 100 incoming pages.

Print from Memory Cards / Cameras
Want to print photos directly from a compatible memory card without using your computer? Just insert the card into a built-in slot, select images on the LCD display, and print! You can also print photos directly from your digital camera/DV camcorder.

5 out of 5 stars Canon MX850   August 29, 2008
After spending a career in print and video production, I was very reluctant to leap into an all-in-one machine when the price was less than I paid for my first digital camera (and not a very good one at that). I worried over the Epson (my choice for years for photo printing), HP and the Canon. By the time I was on a first name basis with the staff at several local shops (spent hours printing and comparing) and after hours on the Web reading all there was to read, I was still confused.
I finally selected the Canon MX850 because the physical unit seemed to be better built than the other two lines. Also the photo/copy products were great. Not sure the photos are quite to the level of the multi-ink high end photo-only printers from Epson but who gets out a magnifying glass to compare. If there is a difference, it would require that level of examination.
The MX850 is 100%+ user friendly and is a remarkable machine for the money. Do your own comparisons and then decide. But make sure you give the MX850 serious consideration. I labored over my decision for more than 6 months. And I made the right one.

5 out of 5 stars Even prints well on 20 pound paper   August 26, 2008
I had a Canon Multipass 750 for 5 years. It worked great as a scanner, printer, copier and fax machine. However, I was having problems when I got a box of 20 pound paper. The MX850 works great even with this light weight paper. There is a place to put the paper, in a slide out tray on the bottom, that keeps it fresh and from absorbing moisture. You can easily select the back feed to use a sheet or several of good paper when you want to print a "good" copy of something. Using the cheep paper for every day printing saves money. The printing and scanning are much quieter than the 750. I highly recommend this machine.

1 out of 5 stars Worst printer I ever owned   August 26, 2008
Constant ink cartridge problems, the printer message says there is no cartridge of a certain color when all are loaded or it says there is more than one color installed. You can not buy refilled cartridges for this machine and it is a heavy ink user with expensive little cartridges. My first Canon and my last Canon, I do not recommend this printer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic printer. A bit bulky and heavy, but prints very well.   August 24, 2008
Really nice printer. Works well wirelessly. Set-up was easy, but the Canon software does not work seamlessly with Iphoto and took a short while to figure.

2 out of 5 stars A printer with issues   August 24, 2008

I decided to replace my trusty Canon i960 and Epson Scanner with the nifty new Canon MX850 with thoughts of consolidation of space and getting newer, better technology. How wrong I was.

First, the good news is that the built in duplex capability is great - my favourite feature actually even though it does slow down the printing considerably. The other great feature was simply the unified capabilities of what this machine can do with lots of features for a relatively low price.

Now the not so great. The big disappointment for me was the scan quality and the included software. Both my documents and receipts that I scanned always required after-the-fact treatment to make them legible (possibly due to this not being a CCD based scanner) but the included software did not make it easy to crop and/or edit the images quickly before output. This really slowed down my workflow. Also, just getting to the scanner software is a convoluted series of clicks that should not be that difficult.

The big show stopper was a "6A00" error that occured one day after 3 months of mild printing and after one successful 6 page print job. Based on a google search, it looked like the "purge unit" had a gooey buildup of ink and sure enough I looked and that was the case + a loose white pin that clearly belonged somewhere but was not in it's place. Apparently the gooey build-up caused the issue. Given that my other Canon was flawless for many years, I didn't have the time or patience to send my relatively new printer for servicing so this was really the final straw for me.

I've gone back to my old trusty and reliable printer and scanner while this one will wait for repair and/or go to a charity. A disappointing experience.
