Born to ride, the Garmin zumo 450 brings all the power of a GPS navigator, wireless communicator, multimedia entertainer, and tour guide all into one device. And it's made just for motorcycles. Designed by bikers, zumo's motorcycle-friendly features make it easy to operate while in the saddle. From back roads to rallies, its preloaded maps and high-end navigation features give you the freedom to go where you want. The zumo 450 includes many of the 550's motorcycle-friendly features, minus bluetooth wireless technology, text-to-speech and XM Satellite, at a price that won't break your budget.

Made for Two Wheels
The zumo is made for extreme durability; it's vibration-tested, waterproof, and built with fuel-resistant plastics to withstand the elements. It's also intuitive, with a glove-friendly touch screen with left-handed controls that make it easy to operate. There's a bright, sunlight-readable, UV-resistant display that makes it easy to view, as well as a unique motorcycle console for trip information, including a fuel gauge to warn you when its time to fill up. The display measures 3.5 inches diagonally and features 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

Measuring 4.8 x 3.9 x 1.6-inches (W x H x D) and weighing just 10.6 ounces, the zumo is small enough to carry with you while you're off the bike. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver is powered by the SiRF Star chipset, which offers extreme accuracy, even when you're riding under dense foliage or between tall buildings. The unit also features Garmin Lock--an advanced anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific four-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location.

The zumo comes with a motorcycle mount with universal mounting hardware so you can mount it anywhere. Garmin also provides custom caps, which are available in a variety of colors, so you can reflect your style.

Navigate the Open Road
The zumo 450 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and a hefty points of interest (POIs) database, including motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and the zumo takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names. In addition, zumo accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras, and it also includes proximity alerts to warn of upcoming POIs. A rechargeable, removable lithium-ion battery that offers up to three hours of use is integrated into the zumo for trip planning or use on foot. In addition, the zumo even accepts electronic maps, making it the ultimate off-road navigator.

Traffic Alerts
The zumo can receive optional TMC traffic alerts (in select cities) when used with a compatible traffic receiver. Simply press a button on the screen, and the zumo recalculates your route to avoid traffic tie-ups.

Route Planning, Sharing, and Entertainment
The zumo makes it easy to plan your next trip and share routes with your riding buddies. Plan trips on your computer before you start. Search for food and fuel stops and local attractions. Then, transfer your route to your zumo and go.

At the end of the day, share your favorite places and rides with other zumo riders, and review your travels in Google Earth. SD card expansion makes it easy for storage and route sharing, and you can download routes to share with your riding buddies. You can also load MP3s onto the unit so you can enjoy music while you're riding. Plus, a JPEG picture viewer lets you share photos of your adventures with friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Very Happy   November 24, 2008
Great product for my motorcycle. Availability and delivery excellent. No follow-up by pushy salesperson to try and sell me accessories. Will buy from Amazon again.

5 out of 5 stars ZUMO 450 Review   November 23, 2008
I waited a long time to buy a GPS for my Valkyrie Interstate. Lots of guys in my clubs had them but I wasn't putting together routes or anything but just riding in the group or tailgunning. Then a friend got one for his Interstate. When I asked him how he was going to hear it he said that it plugs right into the Auxillary port on the radio and you hear it thru your headset. So I searched for the best price and found it on Amazon.com. Takes a little know-how to install the wiring but not difficult with a basic understanding. Now I have a GREAT GPS and I can listen to all of my MP3 tunes thru the built in MP3 player in the ZUMO. Couldn't be happier. Ride leaders attach the route file to our forum notifications and I can download it to my 450 and know in advance where all of the turns are going to be. One of the best toys I have.

4 out of 5 stars It'll get you where your going 98% of the time.   November 23, 2008
I bought the Zumo 450 the day before going on a 1700 mile trip from Dover DE to the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina. During the trip I got rained on and exposed to near freezing temperatures. I choose this over the 550 based on cost over function (I didn't need bluetooth or XM).

Pros:
Reliable information to destination including routes, times, and travel data.
Ease of use even with gloves.
Good mounting system and pretty easy to power from my motorcycle.
Good battery life.

Cons:
You have to use the base to plug anything except a USB chord into the unit and I didn't try driving with this unit hooked to a computer yet so I can't speak for that capability.
Garmin does not make a car power cord with a cigarette adaptor that will fit the base. The only options are to drop another $100 on a car base or modify a motorcycle power chord.
It doesn't seem like it would have been very difficult to make this unit a great multi-vehicle unit but greed got into Garmins way.
The onboard maps don't include recently reconfigured traffic patterns (watch out around Washington D.C.)

In the end I would recommend this unit for motorcyclists as it delivers me where I wanted to go and provided some interesting information along the way.

1 out of 5 stars functional but the software inferface could be better   November 4, 2008

I am going to write a quick review. I first would like to mention that I have seen many Nav systems over the years. Way back when I was part of developing the portable Nav systems for in the car. This unit is nice and functions as described. The POIs are great and routes well ... but ... the user interface is not good. They don't display importan information and the menu system is hard to navigate through. They strongly lack in this area, I would recommend you try one in a local store first or consider some of the other models such as Mio Technology, iNav Corp, etc.

Sorry the review is so short but I hope this helps you in making your decision ... the point consider trying the interface or be aware there are better ones out there. All in all its a little over prices for what you get.

4 out of 5 stars when it works, it works.....usually......   October 25, 2008
Had the Zumo for 2 weeks now. Took a trip in the car ( I spliced a cigarette lighter adapter to end of power cord), everything worked for 2 days, 3rd nite Zumo told me to drive a 2 mile loop to head back to where I started before actually getting me on my way to a hotel it found. After that, no weird stuff for another day......then it runs me down 3 miles of gravel backroads to get to a winery that is less than 1/4 mile from an Interstate off-ramp (Interstate was part of route, too!). Get home, Zumo sits for a week, then it won't power up. Plug in pc cable to charge it (didn't think it should need it), nothing. Nothing in the owners manual about removing battery to "reset" device, found that on Garmin tech site. It worked, wish I had that handy tip a little sooner. 2 days later, all ok. This is my first GPS, don't know if the nav quirks are typical. POI's are pretty handy, found food and motels along the way. Curious what will happpen when I go for a cycle trip and don't have laptop w/ wifi for back-up.
