How did I get along without a Kendle March 11, 2010 Joanie (florida) This is a very important item for me. I travel a lot and I can take a load of books in my purse. The Kendle is my new BFF.
Kindle 6" Wireless Reading Device March 11, 2010 S. Reynolds (Spring, TX USA) This is really great! I love the portability and the ease of use. I would love to see it in color and with a touch screen, though. The buttons, while an improvement over the first generation, are still kind of clunky. I would like to see the keyboard integrated into the screen as a touch, so you could either have more screen space or make the device even smaller. I would also like to see Amazon come up with a way to share the books or make them less expensive. I bought the book, so I should be able to share it, just like I do a physical book. It's no fun to tell a friend, "you have to read this great book I just finished! But, you'll have to buy it to read it". As far as the cost, they should be really inexpensive, since there are no production, copying or distribution costs.
Forget the iPad March 11, 2010 P. Lee Bougt this for my wife for Christmas. She is an avid reader and we have the books to prove it. Thought she might like having a way to carry them with her more easily. She absolutely loves it. Now she doesn't have to figure out what to pack for a trip or plan a trip to the store to find something new. She reads it every night and it works out perfectly. I was concerned when the iPad came out right after I got this but for our needs this works out better. Costs less, free wifi, smaller form factor, longer battery life, better book store.
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE IT!! March 11, 2010 J. Bishop-Royse I recieved the Kindle2 as a birthday gift in October. I just gave birth to my first child and was nursing (still am) and found that the Kindle was a boon, because I could turn the pages with one hand. True Story: I have actually knocked my baby in the head with a book while reading. So the Kindle has been nice in the sense that you can use it with one hand.
I also love the fact that all the books that I am currently reading are all in one place. I dont have to search for them, there are all just there. Am looking forward to taking it on its first airline trip next month. Think it will work quite nicely, not having to carry books with me.
The cost of the books isn't great, however. Most of the new stuff is about 10 bucks... which is often cheaper than the codex version. However, there doesn't seem to be a viable library- rental situation yet. Which would make it even more of a BOON. I personally would buy more books if the cost were lower. As it is now, I buy one at a time and read it, then get the next one. And if you are looking for academic books, obscure titles, etc. you likely won't have much luck. So content wise, the Kindle isn't amazing. But everything else is fantastic (especially the delivery of purchases via Whispernet.)
If you are interested in older out of copyrighted books (like War of the Worlds, etc), you can check out Google's iniative for e-books. I acquired two older books that way. But all in all, I love this device. Am hoping to have it for many years.
Missing something? March 11, 2010 Irene Kopaliani (Detroit, MI) I've purchased a book that downloaded through Kindle on my laptop. You can't highlight, you can't place bookmark, the interface does not have a page number. it is impossible to properly quote the book, since there are no pages. Lack of highlighting forces me to re-read text multiple times, trying to locate what's needed.
Perhaps the physical version of Kindle is better - that i can't judge, but the PC version lacks some BASIC functionality. Well, to be correct, it has NONE. It would have been better to provide the copy in ADOBE-friendly format, at least there I would've been able to highlight and locate pages :(
