Product Description Compact and high-performance, this standard lens is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 4.6 oz. (130g). Its Gaussian optics provides sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.
Amazon.com Product Description Lightweight and affordable, the Canon EF 50mm lens--which offers a fast f/1.8 aperture--is an excellent lens for people who prefer a fixed focal length. Canon's lightest EF lens at a mere 4.6 ounces, the lens boasts a traditional Gauss-type optical design that delivers a sharp performance even when wide open. Good lens, Great price!! December 1, 2008 I bought this lens because it was highly recommended because of quality. I was not disappointed. It takes good pictures in low light situations and is an awesome portrait lens.
Great Lens for the Price! December 1, 2008 I really have enjoyed this lens. It is lighter than the all metal version. It takes very good pictures. I have always loved to take snap shots and this lens helps to make my pictures come to life and really zoom in on the subjects! I would recommend this lens! Great lens for the price.
A must for any kit December 1, 2008 This lens is a must have for any kit, it is a good lens for the price. If you need a lens to help in low light situations or want a good starter portrait lens, this would be it.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the lens is, for lack of a better word, cheap. Without USM and with a plastic body, it just feels a little less quality, but that's what you get for the price.
The low f-stop is nice and gives you a lot more flexibility that you could get without it, just know that if you buy this lens and like it, you're very likely to purchase an upgrade down the road, so if you want to save some money, you may want to pick up the f/1.4 now :)
I wrote more details about this lens here: http://blogs.adamparkerphotography.com/blog/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.8-mk-II-Lens-Review/14/
A Must-Have November 30, 2008 If you have a just acquired a Canon DSLR and the kit lenses just don't do it for you, DON'T HESITATE TO BUY THIS PIECE OF GLASS! Although this lens is the least expensive produced by Canon, it is worth far more the small price you're likely to buy it for. Although the lens has some negative qualities: Slow autofocus that requires good light Awkward manual focusing Cheap plastic chassis This lens is still an unbelievable bargain for what you receive. It is fast, great image sharpness, and useful in nearly every application.
cheap, but cheap November 29, 2008 save your money for the 1.4.. plastic build and really hit or miss on quality. my friend loves this thing, but i hated it. after selling it to him, i picked up the 1.4 version (i know 3x the price..) and it made a huge difference. i'm in the "you get what you pay for" camp on this one..
if feels really flimsy, the front of it can pop out easily, and while pics weren't horrible, they simply were not the quality of the 1.4
