One remote AT LAST! July 28, 2010 Weldon L. Knape (Phoenix, AZ USA) For years we have had to control our TV/Audio/Cable system with three different remotes. Now we just have the one. I tried an inexpensive universal remote that did not even come close. Set up was not difficult. The huge online database did the job. This is the first time any remote has recognized our Onkyo receiver. I really like the "Help" function. When functions get out of sync (TV off with Cable Box and Receiver on}, "Help" steps the user through getting them back on the same cycle. After a lot of research, the Harmony 880 appeared to offer the best value of functionality, cost and ease of use. I have not been disappointed.
Best remote July 24, 2010 Todd Donovan (West New York, NJ USA)
This is my third Harmony 880 remote. Its not like I eat them or anything, but after a couple of years the buttons begin to wear out and fail to make contact. What's nice is since the programming is contained in the computer (and the Internet), a new remote loads virtually instantly and life is quite good again.
Programming the first time takes a little bit of effort to get it just the way you like it. My understanding is that programming does not translate to other Harmony models, so that's why I keep buying the 880.
Really Helped My Parents Out July 23, 2010 Patrick T. Drake (St. Louis, MO USA) Ok, there have been a hundred reviews of this device so I won't go into all of the details. Here's my story: I put together a relatively basic home theater for my parents but they were still juggling three, sometimes four remotes. This was causing fights between them. I was hesitant to tell them that they needed to spend $150 on a solution, and did not want to spend that much on a gift. Well, the refurbed unit (on sale) fixed both of those issues (it ended up being a gift). As the setup was simple (TV, receiver, blu-ray, HD-DVR) it did not take me more than 30 minutes including downloading the software on their computer. Unlike my (admittedly more complex) setup, there was no tweaking required. The only issue they have had is that they sometimes forget to keep pointing the remote at the TV after they have pressed the "on" or "off" button. This is NOT a complaint against the device; I have told them both repeatedly to look at the screen and wait for it to tell them it is done sending commands. Anyway, the remote and base station both looked brand new. All of the buttons are working, and it charged without any issues. The screen is a little dated but that is just because it is an older device (and heck, everything looks dated next to my iphone 4, haha). This remote is so nice, I almost wish my 660 would break so that I could upgrade :)
If you are on the fence, I say "go for it." I cannot say that you won't have issues (as other reviewers have noted) but mine has been absolutely perfect.
Makes the wife happy, with only one remote July 20, 2010 hockeywings This remote has simplified everything for our home theater and gaming. Very easy setup. The only drawback is sometimes it does not switch the input correcting on the tv or doesnt turn on the comcast box. It is very easy to just switch modes and click power on or change the input. It is infrequent enough that it is not bothersome.
I would recommend this remote to anyone
Better than most; but still not perfect July 18, 2010 Christopher Pauly I replaced a Harmony 550 with this unit. The screen is much easier to read and the rechargeable batteries are a big plus. But it still doesn't have that right feel in my hand.
- The plastic is a little slippery and the remote is a little large so it doesn't fit tightly in my hands.
- The size of the remote also makes it difficult to move my thumb over the buttons without having to use another hand to help adjust it around in my hands. This is particularly true when using the DVD/DVR controls of Play/Stop/Fwd/Rev/etc.
- The power button has stung me a couple of times too. I used to set down my remote upside down on a table during a movie when the room is dark. Since the power button sticks out so much, I've more than once accidentally shut down everything as I set down the remote.
All-in-all, this works like any other Harmony remote. But, this is not the prefect remote.
