Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The HD-PLC (High Definition Power Line Communication) Ethernet adaptor makes it possible for your home electrical wiring to serve as a link between your PC and modem. Getting online access is as easy as plugging into a power outlet. You can move your PC and connect to the Internet anywhere there is a power outlet in your home! There's no tricky installation or complicated settings. Just take the BL-PA100A out of the box and plug it into the power outlet. Set up the other equipment on the network, such as routers and PCs, as described in their respective instructions. With speeds up to 190 Mbps, advanced error correction, and AES 128-bit encryption, the BL-PA100A provides peace of mind at the speed of light.

1 out of 5 stars Did not work for me   September 2, 2008
I read the reviews and understood it was a roll of the dice. Decided to take my chances, and sure enough, in my environment I got no signal.
(Actually I did get signal between certain outlets, but none in the rooms I needed to connect.)
It would be nice if there was some kind of inexpensive testing kit to determine ahead of time whether this would work. They do seem to be accustomed to returns though, the box has clear repacking instructions on the inside cover.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure what other people expect for speed, but...   August 13, 2008
First off, apparently my patio home isn't the greatest location for powerline networking due to the large number of UPS's I have installed. But when the room I wanted to put the slave unit only got 1 speed-test light (out of a possible 3) I tracked down an outlet in my master bathroom where all 3 lights lit indicating >=30mbps. I then ran a long CAT5E cable to there from my Xbox 360 and ran a streaming video test. What it came down to was MAYBE 802.11G speed which isn't good enough for HD video, no matter what reviews I found for this device claiming that it would probably be good for HD.

Now, I am still in the retesting part of the install, where I've ordered a new phase coupler for the dryer plug to see if that helps. I had a X10-specific coupler in there, and when I removed it I saw no change in either my X10 signaling or my power networking, but I'm not enough of an expert to know why. Perhaps it's X10 degrading the networking throughput, so I was careful to select a coupler that was for networking. If I can't use the BL-PA100 kit for the 360, I'll see about printing with it.

So no, it's not quite what I needed yet, and it may not be even after more time, money, and effort. Perhaps my standards are higher than others who rate it with 5 stars. Just be careful about your expectations for it...

5 out of 5 stars Gave up on wireless   August 2, 2008
To most of my friends I'm a geek, but after several attempts over a number of years to set up a secure and reliable wireless system, I gave up. The Panasonic system is wonderful! Just plug it in. I have a 6 meg Comcast cable hookup and can get the same download speed from any socket in my house. No security problems to worry about. Just a short ethernet cable to my laptop and I can go anywhere in the house by just plugging in. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect   August 1, 2008
Does exactly what it's supposed to do, right out of the box -- how often can you say that? Set up is simple and quick -- had the thing running in minutes. Even measures its own connection speed. Recommend you download pdf directions from Panny site beforehand, so that you are aware of how the device is supposed to be used (may not work in all circumstances). Nice feature is that ~ 3' power cord plugs into wall outlet, rather than the device itself.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Home Network Connection   July 26, 2008
I needed to connect a home computer that is located in a space "behind" a refrigerator--wireless (b/g, n) just won't go there through all that metal. These modules work well, with no real setup required. Connection speed is adequate for almost all uses except some high-bandwidth video. And the cost was well below alternatives. The connection does drop out occasionally, most likely due to interference from something else in the wiring, but my previous attempt with another manufacturer's modules wouldn't connect at all. Four stars only because of the occasional drop-outs.
