Good camera, do-it-yourself mounting October 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been using the Fire-i on my Mac Mini for about a year. It works with iChat, Skype, and a few other video-phone services. The image quality is much better than the USB webcam that I used previously. I was pleased that it didn't need any configuration - just plug in, and it works. I use a USB headset for audio; this camera doesn't have the [often useless] built-in microphone that most USB cameras come with.
Though it comes with a tripod, the weight of the firewire cable tended to pull the camera over. The camera is really that lightweight. It also felt strange to talk "down" to the camera on the desk while the conversation was "up" on the monitor.
Eventually I rigged up the camera on the top of my monitor with that clear tape you use for packages. If it came with a good monitor-top mount, I'd give it five stars.
Good Camera But Hard To Keep Straight July 27, 2008 With good lighting, this Firewire camera will perform as expected. I bought it because I had a couple of Firewire ports without use and the wider availability of USB webcams would force me to buy a USB port multiplier. My main complaint with this camera is that the provided Firewire 400 cable will tip it over since the tripod is quite flimsy. It should also include a base to place it on top of a flat monitor, a better location for the camera.
It's alright, but not what I was hoping for. November 2, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got the Fire-I Webcam very quickly in the mail and when I opened it up and connected it to my computer, I had trouble setting it up. I finally got it working, and the image quality was stuck at a lower resolution. A while later, I solved that problem as well, and now all I had to do was set and lock the exposure. Problem is, that can't be DONE! Because the camera has all of the settings stored in it and there is no CMOS battery to save anything, it's gone the second you disconnect the camera or reboot your computer. This does not bode well for day-to-day animation. However, it's fair to point out that the camera was not designed for animation over many does, so as a webcam, it does its job very well.
The one bigger gripe I have with it is the tripod mount design. The screw hole is placed too far from the clip, which prevents it from fitting a standard tripod. UNIBRAIN, if you're reading this, please change the tripod mount design; this one is shoddy at best.
