NAVTEQ is a leader in premium-quality digital map data. The current, thorough maps preloaded on the FineDrive 400 will help you find your way in the big city or in a small, rural town. NAVTEQ's digital map database is like no other because it is actually built on the roads of the United States and Canada with precision. Each day, highly trained field researches drive and re-drive highways, streets, alleys and rural roads. Armed with a high level of training and proprietary technology, NAVTEQ researchers have built a database from a driver's view. You'll get much more than simple road geometry. These preloaded maps contain dozens of road attributes for every mile (or kilometer), ranging from speed restrictions to lane configurations. Plus, the NAVTEQ digital maps are loaded with millions of Points of Interest (POIs) with turn-by-turn directions to restaurants, gas stations, shopping and more.

This unit comes with an expandable SD memory slot, and it boasts a sleek, distinctive style. The FineDrive 400's compact and portable design makes it easy to take from vehicle to vehicle. Just plug it in, switch it on, and it's ready to go -- no downloading is required. The touchscreen makes it easy to input a destination or select from a huge number of preprogrammed POIs. Once your destination is established, the device even allows you to select from multiple route options, such as quickest, shortest, highway/local, toll road, and carpool. Various display options -- North-up/Heading-up, Day/Night View, and 2D/3D -- lets you customize your view to meet your preference or setting. And if the kids keep asking you, "Are we there yet?" you can give them the automatically calculated estimated time of arrival and distance remaining on your trip.

1 out of 5 stars Totally unreliable   November 26, 2007
There are much better GPS products out there. It took several minutes for the gps to find a satellite and if your lucky it just might keep you on the road. Fine Drive is unreliable and its customer service is the same...My Fine Drive is now doing its gps coordinating in the trash!

1 out of 5 stars Before buying just try to call their customer service   October 22, 2007

I have got few problems with this device,-the most annoying,- sometimes it stops to provide voice guidance, It guides you alright giving few voice directions and then - silence, so you need to watch the screen all the time. It is always late by a distance of ~50-150ft (depending on your speed) so you will need to correct mentally your position, can be confusing when two intersections are close by. In few months, after I bought my device the speaker broke dawn, still speaks but with a lot of distortions. All my attempts to contact customer service (phone, e-mail) have failed. The phone # is 866-346-3344, there is always the same message "the mail box is full and not accepting new messages"

1 out of 5 stars RealDrive Out of Business   September 26, 2007

I purchased the RealDrive 400 in December of 2006, in early August it just stopped working. I've tried to reach RealDrive, it has a one year warranty, but their phone number has a message that the voice mail is full and does not take messages. I've emailed them ten time, written letters to them, and an email and letter to Amazon....nothing....I finally got an email from a former distributor, and was told the company had gone under..............it's a great product when it works, but now I'm out of luck....do not waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars black screen, system halt   August 6, 2007
I've been trying to post a review but obviously that one didn't show up. In short, the first couple of months it worked fine. After that, I got frequent system halting and black screen during normal use. I learned this from other users and I didn't become the fortunate one. Their service number, as many indicated, is with a full voice box and you just can't get through. I would recommend stay away from this product.

Other than this is a fine product. But can you drive a dead car, or a car that break down every so often?

4 out of 5 stars Decent GPS Unit For The Money   July 5, 2007

I bought this as my first GPS from Staples about 6 months ago and was generally very pleased with it. The pre-loaded Navteq maps were circa 2005 as best I could tell. Some of these units have the MP3 player/FM transmitter and some do not, even though the box indicates they all do. I have used this all over the country from Maine to California, and it has been useful and accurate 95-98% of the time. In Los Angeles it's a near-godsend. I did have a problem in Northern Maine, as another writer indicated, the Navteq maps were generally lacking in that area. This unit is a 12-satellite (Stage 2) reciever. Customer service seems to be a problem for many, and Staples told me they have stopped selling these units because they believe the company may be out of business. I found the interface reasonably easy to deal with, and the 4" screen size was a large plus versus most basic units. Unit takes longer to lock up than a SIRFIII, but I learned to deal with that without much issue. Does not speak street names but does prepare driver for turns well with voice commands. Does not have any battery for those who want a portable unit at times, the ViaMichelin X-930 or other units do. Multiple routing choices are good, POI's are fair. This unit is considerably heftier than many newer small and light GPS's, but I didn't hesitate to put it into checked luggage because of its heft.

Perhaps the best testimony was that when mine was stolen, I bought a refurbished unit (that I hope in fact has the MP3/FM functions) from an auction vendor, when I could have bought any number of new units for $30-$70 more.
